One nanometre (nm) is 1×10-6 millimetres. In order to understand how unbelievably small a nanometre is, we use the following thought experiment: We imagine a bee sitting on the surface of a globe. The ratio of a nanometre to a metre is similar to the ratio of a bee to the diameter of the Earth.
